Best Burgers in London: Top 10

[Last update May 2016]

I've been reviewing burgers in London for more than five years. I've seen it, eaten it, and lived it for such a long time - and you, my fabulous readers, have joined me for the journey. So this is my way of keeping tabs on the running tally of my current Top 10 Best Burgers in London 2016, with links to all my reviews and scoring.

Or, for something slightly different, why not check out my waistband busting Biggest Burgers in London:

1. Lucky Chip Kevin Bacon burger

Lucky Chip Kevin Bacon burger
Lucky Chip Kevin Bacon burger
Lucky Chip Kevin Bacon Burger
Lucky Chip used to sell burgers from a burger van in a car park in East London. The Seabright Arms followed with a pub kitchen residencey, and now they serve on Ridley Road and in the Old Queen's Head pub in Angel. Their Kevin Bacon cheeseburger (pictured above) is, in my view, perfection - from the soft, steamed but toasted bun, to the salty hit of bacon, the melted, sticky American cheese and the flat-top griddled aged beef patty. I challenge you not to have a goofy smile on your face whilst eating it.

Lucky Chip have a lot of fun with some of their other burgers as well - check out the Tom Selleck, the Charlie Sheen, the Danny Trejo, the Chuck Norris and the El Chappo. The Kevin Bacon costs around £8.50 and his is deservedly at the top of my best burgers in London list.

2. The Bleecker Black from Bleecker Street Burger

The Bleecker Black burger

The Bleecker Black burger cut-through
Bleecker St. Burger like to keep it simple. But with a twist. The aged beef in these burger patties is from one of London's top butchers. The fresh sesame-seeded and toasted bun is robust and crunchy. The beef black pudding from Ireland and the american cheese deliver depth, stickiness and umami to the offering, and their own 'special' sauce brings everything together so cleverly. So why is it one of London's best street food burgers? It's the pride owner, Zan, takes in delivering her medium-rare, super-beefy NYC style burgers that makes them so special. The black Bleecker St. burger van pops up all over London, but they're also permanently serving in Old Spitalfields Market near Liverpool Street Station, so make sure you track them down - it'll make your lunch hour that much more bearable.

3. MEATLiquor burgers

Ok, so I'm cheating here a little bit - MEATLiquor/Market/Mission in London are slinging some really great burgers and there are two that you HAVE to try.

a) MEATLiquor Dead Hippie burger

A lot has been said about MEATLiquor, much of it by me in fairness, and there's good reason for that. Yianni's burgers are legendary, even from the days of the #Meateasy they demanded a cult following, and in MEATLiquor they are just as good. For £8.75, the Dead Hippie is a magnificent mash up of a cloched soft bun, double 'animal' fried patties, thick cut and sharp pickles, mustard, ketchup, american cheese and chopped lettuce. It's a hot dirty mess and I love it. You should have really no excuse not to go.

b) MEATMarket Black Palace burger
MeatMarket Covent Garden - Black Palace burger
MeatMarket opened in May 2012 and they nailed it from the start with their Black Palace burger. Steamed, griddled onions, squishy glazed white bun and flat top grill seared beef patties combine to form a burger that's much greater than the sum of it's parts. It's beefy, juicy, messy, and frankly the one of the best burgers you'll taste, for £8.50, in London.

4. Elliot's Cafe burger
Elliot's Cafe burger - borough market.
Elliot's Cafe burger - borough market.
Elliot's Cafe in Borough Market serves one of London's best kept secrets. It's a burger that combines the just six, brilliantly executed ingredients - dill butter, beer-braised onions, comte cheddar, aged beef (from The Ginger Pig in the market opposite), house ketchup, and a house-baked linseed bun. The burger is ONLY served at lunchtimes, so it's worth taking the afternoon off to make sure you don't miss out. Simply glorious.

5. Dip and Flip burger

The Dip & Flip burger takes a thick, flat top grilled beef patty and a thick dollop of 'house' cheese sauce, AND throws in an extra thick layer of gravy-dipped roast beef. This is, quite frankly, a masterstroke. You've got a great cheeseburger AND a layer of juicy, moreish roast beef topped with gravy, mustard and ketchup. Couple that with a cabbage slaw to add in a hit of texture and you have something pretty special. Trust me, you won't want to stop eating it. Oh, and it's under a tenner, too!

Honest Burgers bacon cheeseburger
Honest Burgers bacon cheeseburger

Honest Burgers is deserving of its place on my best burgers in London list as it delivers a cracking British burger experience. Excellent aged meat from The Ginger Pig, toasted demi-brioche bun and some very English touches (mature cheddar, onion jam) combine to create a great burger package. They've got some stunning rosemary salted chips as well, luckily they come with the burger as you're unlikely to want to share them.

7. Shake Shack burger
Shake Shack - double smoke stack
Shack Stack burger
The magic, and downright moreishness of Shake Shack’s appeal lies in the absolutely fastidious attention to detail, which manifests in itself in the presentation of the food on your plate. It’s an impressive feat for, what is ostensibly a fast food burger joint, to bang out such consistency at the counter. And it’s the colours that make the burgers so mouth-watering – the shiny yellow/brown of the bun enticingly open like a clam shell in its burger pouch. The bright green leaf of lettuce, exactly arranged to show off the waves of the curvy leaf. The double slice of deep red tomato, meticulously cut into almost impossibly uniform widths. The bright, almost neon, yellow American cheese, seemingly symbiotic with the beef. And the seared 4oz burger patties, dark brown with caramelisation as the heart of the burger. It’s all so damn…appealing.

8. Burger Bear burger

You can't miss Tom, Burger Bear's founder, on the decks in his burger sunnies, and you won't want to miss him as he cooks up some of the meatiest burgers in London. The Grizzly Bear  gives you a great balance between heavily oak smoked bacon, a slightly sweeter bacon jam, and sticky, american cheese. As well as shredded lettuce with finely chopped onion, pickles, ketchup and French's mustard. The patty is a chuck / rib cap blend which delivers a big beefy hit. Find them in the centre of Old Street Roundabout in a crowdfunded container/diner.

Patty & Bun Ari Gold burger
Patty & Bun Ari Gold burger
After a string of residencies and pop-ups, Patty & Bun has found a permanent home on James Street, and is slowly expanding into other areas. The signature burger is the 'Ari Gold' and it's loving construction and perfectly executed ingredients will put a smile on your face. There's smoky mayo, gooey cheese, top drawer, perfectly cooked beef, and a squashy, secret squirrel bun. Make sure you do yourself a favour and take down a portion of fries with rosemary salt.

Hawksmoor Kimchi Burger
Hawksmoor Kimchi Burger

Hawksmoor has long been known in London as a shrine to meat and deservedly makes the best burgers in London list. The Kimchi burger is an impressive construct, combining Ogleshield cheese with spicy kimchi wrapped around the excellent Hawksmoor burger patty, combined in a Miller's brioche bun. Just brilliant.

11. Bread Street Kitchen burger
Bread Street Kitchen Short Rib burger
Bread Street Kitchen Short Rib burger

Ok - so this is a bonus 11th burger on my list. This stalwart on London's dining scene has had mixed reviews in recent years with s, and that's exactly what you get with the Bread Street Kitchen short rib burger. This big, juicy, wet bear hug of a patty wrapped in a Miller's brioche bun, all for just £11.50. It's stated its case to be featured on this best burgers in London list.

So there we have it folks, an ever evolving list of my Top 10 burgers in London to date!

  6. While I liked Meat Liquor for the venue, drinks, staff, music I fail to understand how it gets on best burger lists. A burger can be too greasy.

    Nothing beats Bar Boulud.

    1. It's the composition of the burger. Perfect bun/patty/topping ratio, great quality meat and a bun that can keep it all together.

    2. Agree with Phil - I thought the MEATLiquor burger was a massive letdown. The venue was fun, though can't say the same about the staff.

On the other hand, cant agree more with you about Lucky Chip - so glad you put it first on your list. Good choice :)

40 minutes to queue to get in to Meat liquor and then wait at the bar and then everything was really greasy. Really overrated and noisey, couldn't talk to the person on the otherside of the table without spitting in their food (at least it added to the flavour!), I make better burgers at home, for me, I like the breakfast club in Shoreditch for burgers. What is it with queues, why queue when there are a 100 other places that do food just as good!

  10. BM - I love this site, and your dedication. very entertaining.

Have you come across Honest Burger in Brixton Village? I think it is up your street.

    • The chips are standout. Thrice fried with skin on, rosemary and lashings of sea salt.
    • Quality – Ginger pig beef, tangy cheddar.
    • Price – including a home-made lemonade the bill comes to £10.
    • They do nothing else. 2 burger options, one chicken and probably a veggie. True specialists.
    • Any drawbacks? Potentially a bit small. If I go with a friend, we buy 3 between 2. But we are greedy. It gets very crowded.

Whilst I have only eaten at a few on your list, it is (in my opinion), finer than Goodmans and streets above GBK (your rating of which surprises me somewhat).

I would be interested in your views,

Hi big World of Burger Love!

Please can you all help me. I have worked globally in a number of "high quality" burger places. I have now finally plucked up the courage to start my own.

My knowledge of all things pattie is vast but I would like to know honestly what you the burger munching public really want from a burger?

Any comments would be much appreciated and I vow to get on this list within two years time!

This is what I want from a burger: Charred outside of patty but medium rare middle. Two smaller patties instead of one big/medium-sized patty. American style cheese. Sesame bun. Gherkins (a must). And finally, a burger sauce not just ketchup and mustard slathered on independently of each other.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I went to Meat Market yesterday and was relly dissappointed. Way too greasy and didn't think the meat was flavoursome at all. Sauce was overpowering and bun went really sloppy. Also we ordered poppaz and they misheard and brought corn puppies which we didn't want, told them and they wouldn't change them - really bad as it was their mistake! Really like the atmosphere and decor but wouldn't return for the food. Hache burger in Clapham is a new find which is great.

  36. I love burgers and I'm not talking the McDonalds variety (although I'm not ashamed to say only a Big Mac will hit the spot!). The burgers at 1920 are definately some of the best Ive tasted in London and that's probably because tehy use 100% Angus beef. Forget the usual burger combinations of cheese or cheese, 1920 serves a varied menu including buffallo Mozzarella with parma ham, garlic butter mushrooms with smoked bacon and my facourite- the burger with chargrilled vegetables and roquefort cheese. Yummy!

Not only is the food fantastic but the cocktails are also great and the staff are only happy to make your drink to your requirements. If you're not too stuffed from your burger you can also play a game of pool.  Not for me though I'm quite happy chilling witha  cocktail.

1920 definately deserves its title of serving the best burgers in town.

  55. I love burgers, and I love lists like these. First thing I do though is check if the list is truly about listing good burgers, or just another pretentious hipster list trying to show how cool and nonconformist the author is. The test is easy: is Byron on the list? If no, then it's not to be taken seriously. I know they are seriously uncool because of their success and overexposure, but one cannot deny that they serve a near perfect burger at a very decent price. And it's a proper, no nonsense burger, which can be eaten by hand and isn't bloated with silly toppings. Give them the respect they deserve!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment Andreas - I am actually a big fan of Byron and have done a number of posts on some of their specials, as well as an in-depth interview with Tom Byng, their founder (take a little look around the blog).

Byron don't make my Top 10 list however, not because they're not good, but because they're not the BEST!

      Delete
    2. Respect definitely! Meat Liquor overcrowded, cramped, don't even think about conversing with your companion(s) and a very ordinary burger served with fries which would make McD's ashamed! Byron is consistently better in every regard.

As it doesn't seem to have got a mention, I'll highly recommend a trip out to Kilburn/Brondesbury for an X Burger. By far my favourite in London. Somehow they manage to make burgers that barely need a napkin but are never dry. Plus, if you want a bigger burger, they spread out rather than up, for easier handling, offering a 5" and 7" version of most burgers.

  67. When was this last updated? Wenlock and disco bistro burgers are no more I thought and no way Lucky Chip are as good as when you first rated them.

  68. I think Dirty burger is just too greasy and meat's too thin. Great chips though.

  72. Completely agree with Meat liquor comments. Was so underwhelmed after waiting outside for ages, the darkness inside, the expensive cocktail I had that I got about 2 sips out of because it was so full of ice, staff slow, too packed, dislike eating food off of the tablecloth, and my burger had gristle in it. Never going back.

Bills is a chain, I love their burger.

  73. Hi,
    great reviewing!
Which Hawksmoor did you go to? I can't find this Kimchi on the menus!

My girlfriend is burger mad so I would like to take her to this try this one. Unfortunately the only burger I found on the menu I saw had "nuggets of bone marrow" which I know wouldn't go down too well!

    Cheers,
    Jon

  74. Hi Theo - Big shout here for Big Easy on the Kings Road and just down from the Bluebird. Go with the Big Easy Hamburger - 100% Longhorn Beef. Hand crafted served with house made creamy coleslaw on a freshly baked bun. If you are that hungry, so much, your stomach think's your throat's been cut, then order the sides of golden fried onion rings & steak house fries combo. It Drops!!

  75. I am shocked to not see that Dip and Flip is on the top ten, amongst my friends we have a little burger club going where we try a new place every month. It is a new club but so far we have visited four places, Patty and Bun, Dirty Burger, Ben's Canteen and Dip and Flip and every single person in the club agreed that Dip and Flip was the best without a doubt over the three we have tried.

We have in fact been to Dip and Flip again because we kept comparing the new places to it and thought maybe we had hyped it up in our heads, on the second visit we realised that we had not, it is by far the best burger we have had so far in London, but we are of course looking forward to trying more places as time passes by.

    1. I have tried an inordinate number of burger joints in London, including all those in the list above and Dip and Flip. To be honest Dip and Flip was OK, good even, but not great...not ground breaking and certainly not as good as Lucky Chip and Patty and Bun. The rest of the burgers on this this wouldn't make the top 10 necessarily if it was updated but I would never put Dip and Flip on here...sorry.

Hey guys - How about this top 5 (in random order so that no feelings are hurt):

    - World Peace Burger (Double bacon cheeseburger with a patty from Bleecker st. and the other half from lucky chip - served in the Old Queens Head)

    - Little Social

    - Dip n Flip

    - Stokey Bear (Grizzly)

    - Ari Gold (Patty&Bun)

Big Caveat: I still have to visit Bar Boulud!

    :)

    Comments?

Glad to see Bread Street on the list, I had a great burger in there myself. I also enjoy the Heartbreaker burger from tongue and cheek when I am at Brockley Market, visiting London. Shake Shak was great on my first visit, next three were not that good, there wont be a fourth visit. Great site

I would put le bun's double as my number one. They're only pop up and I managed to grab it at their residency at Leicester Square when they were last there. Would interested to see if you agree too when they next reappear! Bleeckernwouod be my second followed by electric diner / soho bar kitchens offering

  86. Nick, have you heard of the new gourmet burger place in Acton High Street called Meatcetera? Their Meatcetera and Zaal burgers are out of this world!

I don't think they've done a great job of promoting it but you should pay them a visit.
